History![]()
The Stud was founded in 1984 with the intention of "breeding-up" to Coed Coch lines, as it was not thought at that time that many (if any) pure Coed Coch ponies would be available. However, over the next few years a total of 15 mares and 5 stallions, with the prefix, were purchased or leased, covering all the main A dam-lines, and many of their progeny are in the stud and breeding. Use was also made of other Coed Coch stallions giving a good base for crossing the lines to avoid over in-breeding.
Currently there are 10 young mares and 4 stallions of 100% blood, and another 7 mares of 86% to 96% blood. The two main base lines - i.e. to Seren and to Tan-y-Bwlch Prancio - have (for breeding purposes) been sub-divided, each into two descents. Therefore there are mares tracing to Seren through Serliw (Seirian) and Sirius (Siaradus) and to Tan-y-Bwlch Prancio through both Prydferth and Pioden. Others trace to Anwyled (Snowdon Arian II), Sensigl (Gatley Stardust) and Nans FS1 (Vardra Moonshine FS). There is also another important family (now of 90% + Coed Coch blood) tracing to the foundation mare Taran FS1 through Glascoed Tryfan FS2 - see Dr. Wynne Davies article on page 136 of the Welsh Pony & Cob Society Journal 2000.
Unfortunately some of the mares were old, or left only male stock, so there is no dam-line to Sider (Downland Sugar), or Melog. From the four Pryd mares only 1 live filly was produced from 14 live foalings, Churtoncroft Lowri by Coed Coch Reg (Pryd x Ateb) out of Coed Coch Linda (Pryd x Siwrnai).Another milestone was reached in 2000 with the birth of colt foals to each of the P-line mares (Hufen --> Pioden and Pryddest --> Prydferth). Churtoncroft Pryd (Aries x Pryddest) is retained to hopefully produce the much needed and now very hard to find P-line cross.
Much success in the showring has been a feature, both in-hand and under saddle, with wins at The Royal Welsh, All-Welsh International, and P.U.K. Summer (Peterborough) F.R. Currently 4 ponies are under saddle and winning in M&M, LR/FR, CS, NNS, NS, etc.
As grazing and facilities are limited it is not possible to retain as many fillies and colts as could be, and therefore some of the foals due in the future may be available for sale or lease to anyone interested in retaining the bloodlines.
Anyone wishing to see the ponies will be most welcome.
